Planning a Kitchen Remodel: What to Decide Before Demo Day

Most kitchen remodels that drag on don't stall because of the work. They stall because a decision wasn't made in time: cabinets ordered late, a sink that doesn't fit the counter cutout, or an appliance that changes the electrical plan halfway through. The fix is simple. Make the big decisions before demolition.

Settle the layout first. Are you keeping the sink, range, and refrigerator where they are, or moving them? Keeping the plumbing and gas where they are saves real money. Moving them is often worth it, but it's a decision to make early, because it drives the plumbing and electrical rough-in.

Next, choose cabinets, since they usually have the longest lead time. Countertops can't be measured until the cabinets are installed, so a late cabinet order pushes back everything behind it. Pick your sink and faucet at the same time so the counter fabricator has everything they need.

Then decide on flooring, backsplash, lighting, and paint. Doing the floor as part of the remodel, rather than working around old flooring, usually gives a cleaner result, and it's easy for a general contractor to schedule it in the right order.

Finally, plan how you'll live without a kitchen for a few weeks. A temporary setup with the refrigerator, a microwave, and a coffee maker in another room makes the whole thing easier. When you're ready, we'll walk the space with you and put the full plan and price in writing, in English or Spanish.
